Alfredo Maestro founded his namesake winery back in 1998 in the village of Penafiel, located in the heart of Castilla y Leon. His nine hectares of vines are farmed organically and are rooted into limestone-granite soils and soaring altitudes (750-1,150 meters). According to Alfredo, wine is made ‘with only grapes, well-kept vineyards, and healthy land,’ which is a fairly revolutionary mentality for a region often known for its overripe and over-oaked bottles. ‘Consuelo’ is a hand-harvested, destemmed, and skin-macerated varietal Albillo Mayor. Juice ferments with wild yeasts and is aged in large French barrels for one year prior to bottling, which is done without fining or filtering. This full-bodied wine is marked by bright acidity and grippy texture, noted with flavors of yellow apple, white peach, white flowers, and orange zest.
